The planning profession is changing
What's Driving this Change?
The Planning for the Future project is a comprehensive review and revision of membership issues, including a complete and thorough assessment of membership processes and standards used by CIP and its Affiliates.
Some of the primary issues being addressed under the project include:
- Provincial regulatory influences on membership criteria
- Standardized membership processes between CIP and Affiliates
- Criteria for the accreditation of planning degrees
- Consistency with the Agreement on Internal Trade and portability of membership
- Procedures for foreign applicants
- Efficiency and timeliness of processes
- Improvements to standards and processes based on better practices
In deciding to undertake this project, the practices of other professional associations in Canada and abroad were examined to seek out better practices on such issues as: codes of practice, liability coverage, continuous professional learning, and self-governing mechanisms.
International and inter-provincial agreements are placing an increased emphasis on removing barriers to labour mobility – the freedom of workers to practice their occupations wherever opportunities exist. CIP has worked hard over the years to ensure that its members are able to practice their professions anywhere in Canada and, more recently, has secured reciprocity agreements with planning institutes in other countries to facilitate international mobility for its members.
The Planning for the Future project is investigating equitable, clear, consistent, and transparent access to the profession, domestically and abroad.
The project intends to yield improvements that will enhance professionalism, through standards that are rigorous, consistent and fairly applied, and through membership policies and processes that are transparent, timely, uniform, efficient and effective.
These improvements will position the Institute and its Affiliates to meet the profession's needs today, and build a stronger sense of professional community to meet and exceed the demands of the future.
