About CIP and its Affiliates

The Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) is a not-for-profit collaborative national federation that advances professional planning excellence through the delivery of membership and public services in Canada and abroad. CIP has been dedicated to the advancement of responsible planning throughout Canada since 1919. As a professional institute and certification body it has a mandate from its 7,500 plus members to:

  • champion and lead progress and change in planning practice;
  • act as the authoritative voice and the primary information and knowledge sharing network for planners;
  • address issues of importance to the planning profession and/or the public interest;
  • institute national standards for training, certification and best practices achieved through continued professional development of its membership; and
  • deliver relevant and contemporary benefits and services to its members.

The collaborative national federation comprises seven affiliates that play a key role in developing and administering national standards. To comply with its members’ mandate, the Institute and its Affiliates want to ensure that standards are rigorous, consistent, and fairly applied. Portability of membership must be maintained across the country. It is also critical to develop future strategies and engage in improvements so the Institute has the capacity to manage change both within and outside the profession.
